PUBG Recoil Control Guide
Recoil control decides most mid-range fights in PUBG. Here is how recoil works, which attachments help, and a short daily routine to get better quickly.
How recoil works in PUBG
Every automatic weapon kicks upward as you fire, with some sideways movement. Vertical recoil is fairly predictable – you counter it by pulling your mouse down at a steady rate. Horizontal recoil is more random and is the main reason sprays drift off target. Each gun has its own feel: the M416 is gentle, the Beryl M762 climbs hard, and LMGs became harder to control in Update 43.1, especially when prone.
Attachments that reduce recoil
| Slot | Attachment | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Muzzle | Compensator | The usual choice for spraying – reduces recoil the most among muzzle attachments. |
| Muzzle | Flash hider | Hides muzzle flash with a smaller recoil benefit. |
| Muzzle | Suppressor | Hides your sound and flash at range; less recoil help. |
| Grip | Vertical foregrip | Reduces vertical recoil – good for long sprays. |
| Grip | Angled foregrip | Helps horizontal recoil and speeds up aiming down sights. |
| Grip | Half grip | A balanced option that helps recoil and recovery. |
| Grip | Thumb grip | Faster aiming down sights with some vertical recoil help. |
| Grip | Laser sight | Improves hip-fire accuracy rather than ADS recoil. |
| Stock | Tactical stock | Reduces recoil and sway on weapons that accept it, such as the M416. |
Exact values change with balance updates, so test combinations in Training Mode. As a rule, a compensator plus vertical foregrip suits players who struggle with vertical climb, while a compensator plus angled or half grip suits those whose sprays drift sideways.
Stance and movement
- Crouching reduces recoil compared with standing and is quick to get in and out of.
- Prone reduces recoil further for most weapons, but makes you an easy target and is slow to leave. Note that Update 43.1 reduced the prone advantage for LMGs.
- Standing still is far more accurate than moving. Stop, shoot, then move.
- Peeking with lean keys exposes less of your body – practise spraying while leaning.
Spray, burst or tap?
| Range | Technique | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 0–30 m | Full spray | Recoil has little time to build; damage per second wins. |
| 30–80 m | Short bursts (3–8 shots) | Reset your aim between bursts to stop drift. |
| 80 m+ | Taps or single fire | Switch fire mode or use a DMR. Spraying at long range mostly wastes ammo and reveals you. |
Sensitivity and recoil
If you cannot pull down far enough during a spray, your ADS or scope sensitivity may be too low – or your vertical multiplier too high. If you over-pull, the opposite is true. Fix sensitivity first; there is no point practising a pull-down you cannot physically complete. See the sensitivity guide.
15-minute daily practice routine
- Warm-up (3 minutes): spray a wall at 25 metres with your main AR and red dot. Look at the bullet holes – aim for a tight vertical line.
- Distance ladder (5 minutes): spray targets at 30, 50 and 75 metres. Switch to bursts as soon as the group spreads wider than a player's torso.
- Scopes (4 minutes): repeat at 50 metres with a 3x and 4x.
- Tracking (3 minutes): follow a moving vehicle or teammate while firing short bursts.
Do this before playing for two weeks and most players see a clear difference. Focus on one weapon until it feels automatic before moving to the next.
Common mistakes
- Pulling down too late – start pulling the moment you fire.
- Spraying while moving, which adds spread on top of recoil.
- Changing sensitivity every session, which resets muscle memory.
- Choosing the hardest gun because it has the highest damage. Start with the M416.

Frequently asked questions
How do you control recoil in PUBG?
Pull your mouse down at a steady rate as you fire, fire in short bursts beyond about 30 metres, crouch or go prone when safe, and use recoil attachments such as a compensator and vertical or half grip.
What is the best grip for recoil in PUBG?
A vertical foregrip helps most with vertical climb. An angled or half grip helps more with sideways drift. Test both on your main weapon in Training Mode.
Does crouching reduce recoil in PUBG?
Yes. Crouching reduces recoil compared with standing, and prone reduces it further for most weapons, although Update 43.1 reduced the prone advantage for LMGs.
Which PUBG gun has the easiest recoil?
The M416 is the easiest assault rifle to control and the best weapon to learn spray control with.
